Schmidlapp-Humes Estate

Encompassing over 75 acres, the Schmidlapp-Humes Estate is located in Mill Neck, historically part of Long Island's "Gold Coast." While the Gold Coast was renowned for its collection of lavish country estates commissioned by the robber barons of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Schmidlapp-Humes Estate embodies a subsequent wave of development informed by more refined designs and modest plans. After acquiring much of the former property, the North Shore Land Alliance (NSLA), a public land trust, commissioned Gregory Dietrich Preservation Consulting to complete an inventory of its cultural resources as a means of obtaining a determination of eligibility for National Register listing. Entitled the Schmidlapp-Humes Estate Cultural Resource Inventory, GDPC's study identified multiple areas of significance, owing to its designers and its cohesive ensemble of Colonial Revival-style buildings and structures, modern American and Japanese-inspired gardens, and distinctive statuary and objects. Following the successful completion of this study, GDPC also wrote the nomination which led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
