Our Lady of Peace

The prospect of dwindling congregations has led to the closure of multiple houses of worship throughout the country, often at the direction of institutional leaders intent on cost-cutting and consolidation. After the Archdiocese of New York announced the closure of the Church of Our Lady of Peace, located in the Treadwell Farm Historic District on New York City's Upper East Side, its congregants mobilized—first to appeal to the Archdiocese, and later, to the Vatican to reverse the Archdiocese's decision. As part of this effort, GDPC was commissioned to write a report detailing the church's history and historical significance as a means of making the case for its ongoing preservation as a house of worship. The report, entitled The Church of Our Lady of Peace Historic Architectural Investigation, highlighted its significance in the areas of architecture, art, history and culture and led to the Archdiocese to reverse its decision for permanent closure. Today, the church continues to operate as a house of worship under the auspices of the Egyptian Christian Coptic Orthodox Church.
