Gunston Hall

New York City has long been heralded for its wealth of educational institutions, boasting world-class colleges, universities, conservatories, seminaries, historical societies, libraries, museums, and a vast network of scholarly institutions that promote a particular medium or aspect of history. Many of these institutions house private collections featuring rare manuscripts and other ephemera that can be essential to the research process but inaccessible due to individuals living out of state or out of the country. Upon learning that the New York Public Library housed an extensive collection of documents and photographs related to George Mason's Gunston Hall, a Virginia-based archaeologist contacted GDPC about conducting research focused on the landscape and grounds. After reviewing numerous articles, correspondence and photographs, GDPC photographed the relevant materials, organized them by their source files, and forwarded the findings to the client. As a result of GDPC's documentation of the relevant files, the archaeologist was able to complete an essential component of research on the property to inform his overall investigation.
