Spear & Company Factory

Located in Ozone Park, Queens, the Spear & Company factory was established in 1890 and specialized in the manufacture and wholesale distribution of hats and caps for men and children. After merging with the Regal Hat Company of Chicago in 1919, the newly minted Regal Spear Company was touted as the largest organization of its kind in the cloth hat and cap industry. Designed by John B. Snook & Sons, one of New York City's oldest architecture firms of the time, Spear & Company factory featured some of the city's earliest reinforced-concrete factory buildings with a core complex dating to 1906-1928. After acquiring the building for conversion to a multi-tenant industrial use, Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center engaged GDPC to get the property listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of larger effort to secure historic rehabilitation tax credits. Working with GMDC's staff and consultants, GDPC not only got the property listed, but also facilitated the capture of federal and state tax credits, resulting in a magnificent revitalization of the historic complex.
